One year after the creation of White Sands National Park, a new addition has joined the list of American national parks. Last December, the United States approved the creation of New River Gorge National Park, the 63rd in the National Park System (NPS) and the first to be created in the state of West Virginia.
Located some 500 kilometres from Washington D.C. in the Appalachian Mountains, New River Gorge is renowned for its natural treasures and was already a major attraction in the region. The site covers almost 30,000 hectares where the flowing waters of the New River, one of the oldest rivers on the continent, meander.
According to scientists, the New River formed in the Appalachians over 200 million years ago, carving out the longest and deepest gorge observed in these mountains. On either side are lush green valleys and sandstone cliffs offering spectacular views.
The area is also home to a rich biodiversity, including dozens of species of amphibian, mammals including several bats, and hundreds of plants. All these natural wonders are much appreciated by hikers. Other activities on offer include climbing, rafting, kayaking, stand-up paddling, fishing and mountain biking.
The New River Gorge is also home to a number of abandoned, ruined and rehabilitated sites dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. A period when the region was very active, exploited for its timber and coal and crossed by the railway.
Already a National River since 1978
"The New River Gorge is one of the most popular playgrounds in West Virginia", explained US Senator Joseph Manchin in a press release. Manchin was one of the representatives who supported the bill to reclassify the area, which had been designated a National River by the NPS since 1978.
Launched a few years ago, the initiative faced opposition from local people concerned about the future management of the site, and from a hunters' association denouncing the loss of part of their hunting ground with the new designation. After discussions, the project, supported by the State Governor, was finally approved.
New River Gorge is now classified as a National Park, but also as a National Preserve. It is the 20th national reserve listed by the NPS and the only one in West Virginia.
"We all know that the New River Gorge is perhaps West Virginia's most famous landmark because of its breathtaking natural beauty and its elements of unique Appalachian history and culture," commented Senator Shelley Moore Capito, who also supported the initiative.
"This designation will allow more people to share in this wild and beautiful adventure that West Virginians are so proud of. I'm sure it will be cherished and enjoyed by generations to come", she enthused, suggesting that visitor numbers could rise by 20%.
Under the legislation, the national park can be extended by a further 1,500 hectares if necessary for development. It already has two visitor centres and several campsites. Each year, the New River Gorge and neighbouring sites welcome some 1.3 million visitors.
